Timewarner/AOL and Verizon are pillaging IRC networks. - Anthony's Blog - AbleNET IRC Network

Time Warner/AOL known to many as AOL and RoadRunner are redirecting traffic on IRC ports (such as 6667) to their own network (it says irc.foonet.com but you can't connect to it directly). At this point they force you to join a channel called #badbotbad, at which they put .remove in the subject. Instead of targeting bots, they are targetting everyone, with an outmoded and half assed method. To top it off, they are not restoring access past their transparent proxy and their lower level tech support claims to know nothing of it. Time Warner/AOL just goes to show how they are one to two years behind the curve, as most botnets are now targeting P2P file sharing networks.

Verizon on the other hand has taken to blocking entire IPs, outright! Meaning that users can not connect on any port, nor can they view websites associated with those IPs. This type of behavior by major ISPs can legitimately cause the death of IRC as we know it, thusly killing entire communities by removing an internet users right to choose! FIGHT BACK!! Protect your freedom of choice!

These ISPs have provided us, the IRC Networks, no means of redress! We can not even address our concerns with a real person and there is no way to speak with anyone! We can not even defend ourselves in the process! I personally implore all of you to contact your ISPs and tell them to STOP selectively restricting the internet of their safe communities. Protect your right to choose how to responsibly use your service!

If these ISPs really wanted to solve their problems, they would offer free intrusion scanning and protection for their clients as well as a more comprehensive virus scanning service for their average users! AbleNET is very aggressive against botnets and illegal activity, by choice! We can protect ourselves better than the ISPs can... The ISPs seek only to destroy our communities!

One of our users was nice enough to take screen captures (see reference below), from Time Warner/AOL. As you can see, this is CLEARLY NOT AbleNET!

So I had a visitor as I slept... see transcript as follows:

i notified a sysadmin contact at cox about your dns issue -- it should be resolved now
do note that the ISPs don't care if people complain about them -- there's a reason why dslreports is only the shithole of the american internet
moreover - the reason why they were doing this is because their upstream peer savvis demanded they did so
otherwise savvis would fully block IRC on their network
anyway that's all i know of it, and no i don't work for them :P
so anyway, can you assholes stop trolling about my isp? i don't particularly think these assertions about ARIN rules being violated are very nice
especially when i quite like my high speed FTTP connection they provide (which, btw cox isn't timewarner)
i don't think i'd appreciate having to switch to timewarner cable or AT&T's "state of the art ADSL2+ product"
because cox.net's BGP ASN gets pulled over some now-rectified ARIN violations

While AbleNET's particular issue has since been resolved previously, I appreciate his efforts to call; however, that being said...

I am not sure whether s/he was being sarcastic or s/he was speaking seriously. I don't believe it is troll-like behavior to stress your right to 'exist'. While the ISPs are under no obligation to help IRC there is an understanding organizations have a right to exist.

I choose to believe he was being sarcastic because he admits that there were ARIN violations... So I thank him or her for their attempt to clear up the error, after the fact. If it wasn't sarcasm, then it just makes it the 3rd hate message I've had about me picking on the ISPs since this all started.

I would also like to note that NOONE is saying that these ISPs are the same company... I don't see the confusion... I never said Cox and Time Warner were the same.... no one has, yet some people are reading it as if we are saying they are all the same organization... What we are saying is... 'we were digitally accosted by multiple ISPs at the time same time.'

What strikes me is that there are few individuals who have taken the 'who cares' attitude... and I wonder 'what if sbc-global blocked google because of their yahoo deal?' what if the ISPs outside of AOL and Time Warner blocked AIM because of their own messengers? What if the powers that be on the internet decided that they would restrict access to anything that may represent a conflict of their own interests... would these same people still be so apathetic? With this whole Net Neutrality issue, no one is willing to accept that we stand to lose the last frontier of free speech and enterprise. Market forces don't dictate everything. We've already proved that as a society, we'll give up more to get less... And when you're forced to rely on looking for the best of the worst, do you really get anything at all?

People... apathy gives way to tyranny. Next time you're dissatisfied with the ways of things, ask yourself what you did to promote a better way.
