LASIK After One Week and No Regrets... Yet!
Tue, 27 Nov 2007 at 09:40 PM
After one week:
Pros:
- My vision is better than I can remember it being in at least 20 years.
- Still no regrets over doing it.
- I haven't experienced light sensitivity as a result of the surgery; however, my glasses were transition lenses and have been for 15 years, so there has been some adjustment.
- Shaving has become surprisingly easier as my area of sight has increased as has the clarity of light.
- My peripheral vision is now amazing.
- I don't have to worry about my glasses getting fogged, wet or dirty. If you wear glasses, you know how annoying it is to walk in the rain and not be able to see.
Cons:
- My eyes still get itches, irritation and dryness. I want to rub them so bad, but I have resisted (for the most part).
- Distance vision still isn't great, although a significant improvement from glasses and getting incrementally better every day.
- Vision goes from clear to slightly blurred as the day wears on. I can mitigate this somewhat by adding drops to my eyes. I am also still using the Lotemax to ease the irritation, albeit less frequently.
- I also wake up to slightly blurry vision.
- My left eye is not as sharp as my right eye.
- I still have a burst blood vessel ring around my irises (more so my right eye than my left), where they peeled back and restored the cornea.
- Still seeing halos around lights and star bursts, although they are fading somewhat.
As always, I suggest doing your homework first and don't run to the cheapest procedure you can find. I would compare your prospective doctors against each other and see how they rate, see what feedback you've gotten from other patients (LASIK patients are almost always more than willing to discuss their experiences it seems) and see how they are viewed by their peers, in the form of awards and recognition. You only have one set of eyes, so if the choice is $900/eye for an unknown or less than sterling surgeon vs. $1800/eye for a well respected surgeon at the top of his profession... It's an easy decision, spend the money. The technology (if you choose the right one) may have come a long way in preventing mistakes and computerizing the process; however, you still need faith in the person operating the machinery and shooting the laser into your eyes.
